Amber fascination

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Amber is a natural substance known for thousands of years. Besides its beauty and use in jewelry and adornments, amber has been (and still is)  used in perfumes and folk remedies (teething, for example). Colors range from pale yellow through deep red and even greens and blues. The warmth of amber has been a fascination of mine and I love wearing it.

Natural amber with inclusion of plants and insects is quite expensive. A less rare form is shown in these two pieces where amber was heated and pressed into a form. Even so, it still retains its beauty and warmth.

Something about cufflinks

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Cufflinks have fallen out of every-day fashion. But there is something about cufflinks that feels classy.  Both men and women used to only wear french cuffs with cufflinks. Sleeve buttons were for work shirts. I had many pairs; some even looked like buttons! Agates and mother-of-pearl were popular as were ship and animal figures.

Of course now, for more formal evenings, men still wear cufflinks and studs and certainly look classy. Generally, this jewelry is smaller and of more precious materials than the daywear type.
